The increasing global energy needs and the high integration of renewable energy generation require long-distance power transmission and multi-terminal complex grids. High-voltage direct current (HVDC) is an appealing alternative for future grids. Recent HVDC research has focused on voltage-source converter (VSC) technology. However, VSC is unable to handle DC contingencies. Thus far, AC breakers have been the only way to clear DC faults, though with significant economic and societal consequences. Other protection concepts include multi-level converters and faulty line identification methods. Still, DC breakers are necessary to isolate the faulty line from the network. The goal of this work is to investigate multi-terminal grid topologies under fault cases and analyze the impact of current limiting measures and control strategies on the developing DC fault currents. DC breaker technologies are studied and compared based on the total fault interruption time and the system post-fault operation restoration. With the analyzed concepts, HVDC system designers will be able to understand and tackle DC faults to facilitate an uninterruptible power flow amongst several different AC grids.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: South Asia, grade: Distinction, Coventry University, language: English, abstract: This research aimed at determining whether the Malaysian regulatory landscape governing the offshore decommissioning of petroleum facilities is adequate to face the scale of offshore decommissioning activities that will involve Malaysia, or whether it may need to be reviewed and inspired by the more established and long-standing UK's offshore decommissioning regime and practices. The researcher estimated that 195 offshore installations will undergo decommissioning in Malaysia by the year 2025, with a growth of offshore decommissioning activities equal to 244.4% over a ten-year period. Nevertheless, Malaysia has not yet promulgated any national decommissioning regulations for the oil and gas (O&G) industry - it only relies on the guidelines provided by its national oil company (NOC) PETRONAS. However, both these guidelines and the current Malaysian oil production-sharing contract (PSC) appear to be lacking guiding principles, and seem to be allowing international oil companies (IOCs) to escape their legal and financial responsibilities associated with offshore decommissioning. It is important to make a research on the loss calculation method of MMC and state formulae for the losses as it is a vital step during the design stage of the MMC based HVDC system. In this research work, the structure of MMC based HVDC system is discussed. Three sub module topologies'; half bridge, full bridge and clamp double sub module, are discussed. A method based on the average and root mean square (RMS) values of the current passing through the sub module is discussed. The conversion losses in the switching devices of the sub modules are calculated using the method. A cases study is taken into consideration then with certain parameters. Using these parameters a MATLAB program is developed. With the help of the program the losses and efficiency curves for each switching device by taking each sub module separately are obtained respectively. Since winds at sea are stronger and more consistent than onshore winds, the demand for offshore wind turbines has increased over the last years. As energy can be produced more efficient in deeper water, several floating offshore wind turbine constructions, such as the OC3 Hywind spar-buoy, have been proposed. The design of floating wind turbines depends on the simulation of the system behavior caused by exciting forces. This thesis deals with the comparison between different methods for calculating wave forces and resulting platform motions of a floating offshore wind turbine. On the one hand, wave exciting loads computed with Morison's equation are compared to the hydrodynamic forces simulated by the open source code FAST on the basis of the diffraction theory. On the other hand, response motions of the floating structure are simulated by the commercial offshore software SESAM in the frequency domain and compared with the motions calculated by FAST in the time domain.
