Andrew Swift Wind Energy Essentials. Societal, Economic, and Environmental Impacts

Examines the possible societal impacts of wind energy projects and explains the potential issues faced when siting, constructing, and operating a wind energy project. This book begins with a history of wind power and the social impacts of both electricity and wind power from a historical perspective, a discussion of basic electrical terms, and a primer on the conversion of power in the wind to electricity. Much of the second half of the book is devoted to comparing wind energy to other forms of electric generation, both renewable and non-renewable sources. In order to have a true understanding of the impact of wind energy on society, one also has to have a thorough understanding of the impacts that other sources of electric generation have, such as fossil-fuelled plants or nuclear power plants. The comparison of electric generation sources includes a review of how such sources are typically utilized within the electric system, as well as the economic factors and environmental considerations that affect which resources utilities or operators of electric grids have to take into account. The authors conclude with a discussion of energy policies in the U.S., individual states, and foreign nations, how these policies influence the use of renewable energy, and what our future may hold in terms of energy supply and demand. Some highlights of this book are: Discusses the wind energy impacts on the environment, local economy, electric utilities, individuals and communities Provides a visual explanation of wind energy principles through tables, graphs, maps, illustrations and photographs Offers a comprehensive overview of the issues associated with the creation and use of wind energy Models chapters around an existing university curriculum Spanning the broad range of environmental, financial, policy and other topics that define and determine the relationships between wind energy technology and our energy-dependent society, Wind Energy Essentials is a resource for students, universities, and the entire wind energy industry.

Akshay Kumar DFIG-based Wind Power Conversion System Connected to Grid

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Engineering - Power Engineering, grade: 7.8, Ajay Kumar Garg Engineering College, course: M.Tech, language: English, abstract: Wind generation has become the most important alternate energy source and has experienced increased progress in India during the past decade. While it has great potential as an alternative to less environmentally friendly energy sources, there are various technical challenges that cause wind to be considered negatively by many utilities. Wind energy conversion systems suffer from the fact that their real power generation is closely dependent on the local environmental conditions. The Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) based wind turbine with variable-speed variable-pitch control scheme is the most popular wind power generator in the wind power industry. This machine can be operated either in grid connected or standalone mode. In this thesis, a detailed electromechanical model of a DFIG-based wind turbine connected to power grid as well as separately operated wind turbine system with different sub-systems is developed in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment and its equivalent generator and turbine control structure is realized. In this regard following configurations have been considered:• DFIG with Battery storage sub-system• DFIG with Buck-Boost converter• DFIG with transformer• DFIG with 3-winding transformerAddition of battery storage and buck-boost converter sub-systems into the system enables no...

Diploma Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: 1,0, University of Hannover (A&M University Texas, Ludwig-Franzius-Institut für Wasserbau, Ästuar- und Küsteningenieurwesen), language: English, abstract: Unlike fossil fuels (for example oil, coal and natural gas), wind energy is a renewable energy resource. Since winds at sea are stronger and more consistent than onshore winds, the demand for offshore wind turbines has increased over the last years. As energy can be produced more efficient in deeper water, several floating offshore wind turbine constructions, such as the OC3 Hywind spar-buoy, have been proposed. The design of floating wind turbines depends on the simulation of the system behavior caused by exciting forces. This thesis deals with the comparison between different methods for calculating wave forces and resulting platform motions of a floating offshore wind turbine. On the one hand, wave exciting loads computed with Morison's equation are compared to the hydrodynamic forces simulated by the open source code FAST on the basis of the diffraction theory. On the other hand, response motions of the floating structure are simulated by the commercial offshore software SESAM in the frequency domain and compared with the motions calculated by FAST in the time domain.

Robert W. Righter Windfall. Wind Energy in America Today

Currently the world's fastest-growing source of energy, wind generation offers hope for a partial solution to our energy problems by converting nature's energy into electricity without exposing our planet and its inhabitants to the dangers of heat, pollution, toxicity, or depletion of irreplaceable natural resources. Windfall tells the story of wind energy's extraordinary growth in the past decade and examines the arguments both for and against its use.Historian Robert W. Righter explains how wind is transformed into energy and examines the land-use decisions that affect the establishment of new wind farms. The book also discusses the role of tax credits and other government subsidies in the creation of transmission systems between the turbines and the urban end users. The spread of wind farms has also given rise to backlash. A critical advocate of wind energy, Righter addresses the cultural dimensions of resistance to wind generation and makes considered predictions about the directions the technology may take. His sympathetic treatment of opposing arguments regarding landscape change, unwanted noise, bird deaths, and human medical implications are thought-provoking, as is his recommendation that we place the lion's share of turbines on the Great Plains.Righter's book does not shy away from scientific explanations, but it is no technical manual. For a wide areas wind farms, that composed of many connected zones of different wind turbines and different generators, this book aims to study , model , and simulate of a wind farm model that includes a wind turbine and three different types of generators. The proposed generators are , three phase synchronous generator, three phase squirrel-cage induction generator and three phase doubly-fed induction generator, these generators are the main machines that generally used in the field of wind energy generation. All generators are connected in parallel at the point of common coupling (pcc) and connected to the utility grid. Different line faults are simulated, and wind power system stabilization is achieved using pitch controller. Several experimental results were taken and discussed in this book.

Yuly Sokolovsky, Vladimir Rotkin THEORETICAL AND TECHNICAL BASIS FOR THE OPTIMIZATION OF WIND ENERGY PLANTS

Description: The work contains an analytical review of modern wind energy, based on different physical principles. We consider wind installations with horizontal-axial and vertical-axial configurations, innovative designs for wind turbines. Also, modern methods and possibilities for scaling and optimal regulation of wind parks are considered. Mathematical models for the interaction of airflow with blades of collinear and orthogonal plants have been developed, and methods for optimal regulation have been identified that increase the energy efficiency of plants. A number of patent developments represent promising directions for the development of wind energy: horizontal and vertical collinear installations, vertical-axial orthogonal devices with unregulated and self-regulating blades and with optimal control systems based on the author methods of optimizing.

Konrad Bergmeister Concrete Structures for Wind Turbines

The wind energy industry in Germany has an excellent global standing when it comes to the development and construction of wind turbines. Germany currently represents the worlds largest market for wind energy. The ongoing development of ever more powerful wind turbines plus additional requirements for the design and construction of their offshore foundation structures exceeds the actual experiences gained so far in the various disciplines concerned. This book gives a comprehensive overview for planning and structural design analysis of reinforced concrete and pre-stressed concrete wind turbine towers for both, onshore and offshore wind turbines. Wind turbines represent structures subjected to highly dynamic loading patterns. Therefore, for the design of loadbearing structures, fatigue effects – and not just maximum loads – are extremely important, in particular in the connections and joints of concrete and hybrid structures. There multi-axial stress conditions occure which so far are not covered by the design codes. The specific actions, the nonlinear behaviour and modeling for the structural analysis are explained. Design and verification with a focus on fatigue are adressed. The chapter Manufacturing includes hybrid structures, segmental construction of pre-stressed concrete towers and offshore wind turbine foundations. Selected chapters from the German concrete yearbook are now being published in the new English «Beton-Kalender Series» for the benefit of an international audience. Since it was founded in 1906, the Ernst & Sohn «Beton-Kalender» has been supporting developments in reinforced and prestressed concrete. The aim was to publish a yearbook to reflect progress in «ferro-concrete» structures until – as the books first editor, Fritz von Emperger (1862-1942), expressed it – the «tempestuous development» in this form of construction came to an end. However, the «Beton-Kalender» quickly became the chosen work of reference for civil and structural engineers, and apart from the years 1945-1950 has been published annually ever since.
